This comprehensive publication brings these images together in one place for the first time, highlighting their importance in capturing what Thornton saw as a rapidly vanishing way of life.

Thornton recorded her experiences not just in paint, but in words as well. Both Potlatch People (a republication and update of 1966's Indian Lives and Legends) and Buffalo People chronicle her painting trips on the coast and plains, recounting anecdotes, observations and the lives of many of her sitters.
